Brewers Towner Commission
Eastbourne’s Towner Art Gallery invited proposals from artists and designers with the support of Brewers Decorator Centres for a temporary art commission that would transform the exterior of the gallery building with an exceptional wall painting.
It would encompass all white rendered facades around the front, side and back of the award-winning building, which was designed by Rick Mather Architects.
Artists and designers were encouraged to develop proposals that celebrate the spirit of Towner and its location. Set back from Eastbourne’s unspoiled Victorian seafront at the entrance to the world-famous South Downs National Park, the gallery is set in East Sussex, a county with a long history of inspiring and providing refuge for artists.
My proposal was called ‘Hills and Valleys’ and the idea for the design is based on the rolling Sussex hills so often depicted by Eric Ravilious in his works. I felt it was important that Ravilious be the inspiration given his importance as an artist, designer and Eastbourne resident familiar with the Sussex landscape. All colours used in the mural have been taken from his paintings and you can find a colour map and values from below.
